the collective

This capstone project addresses the need for a shared, safe gathering space for creatives in downtown Vancouver. Located in Gastown, the proposal responds to the area’s cultural richness while acknowledging the ongoing effects of gentrification and cycles of disparity within the community.

The design envisions a creative collective that fosters collaboration, connection, and artistic exchange. By blending Gastown’s historic charm with contemporary interventions, the space creates an inclusive yet curated environment that supports diverse cultural expression. The result is a community-driven hub that inspires creativity while providing a unique and meaningful place for creatives to gather.

ATMOSPHERE

mood board inspiration

The mood board sets the direction for a space that is comfortable, opulent, and sophisticated, designed to reflect the lifestyle and mindset of creative professionals who will use the space. The inspiration blends warm materials, artistic elements, and refined details to create an environment that encourages both relaxation and creativity.

FLOOR PLANS

MAIN FLOOR PLAN

This thoughtfully designed floor plan brings together comfort, flexibility, and social connectivity through three primary zones: a welcoming lounge, a convertible café lounge, and a dedicated dining area. Each space flows seamlessly into the next, creating a dynamic environment suited for both relaxed gatherings and vibrant social occasions. Intended to be a collaborative hub for creatives to gather and connect.

MEZZANINE PLAN

The mezzanine level serves as a natural extension of the first-floor experience, offering a more intimate and exclusive setting for connection and collaboration. Overlooking the lounge, café, and dining areas below, this elevated space maintains visual connectivity while providing a sense of privacy and distinction.

Designed as a dedicated networking zone, the mezzanine creates an environment where meaningful conversations can unfold without distraction. Comfortable seating clusters encourage small group discussions, while flexible arrangements allow the space to adapt for private events, curated gatherings, or members-only experiences.

lighting plan

MAIN FLOOR lighting plan

The reflected ceiling plan is designed to support the flow of the floor plan, using ceiling articulation and lighting to guide movement between spaces. Subtle variations in ceiling height and lighting help define transitions between circulation, lounge, and gathering areas while maintaining a cohesive visual language.

Layered lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, combining ambient illumination with accent lighting to highlight architectural features and key focal points. Linear and recessed fixtures reinforce the direction of movement and enhance spatial clarity.

CONCEPTUAL

conceptual sketches

At this early stage, the focus is on understanding how people will experience the space. Quick, expressive lines capture the relationship between the lounge, convertible café, dining area, and mezzanine. The sketches explore flow, sight-lines, and natural gathering points - identifying where conversations spark, where privacy is needed, and where energy should build.

CROSS SECTION

main & mezzanine cross section

The cross section is a critical study in understanding the full spatial experience - revealing not just layout, but height, depth, and the emotional impact of volume. Through this sectional exploration, the true scale of the lounge is expressed - double heights, and open sight-lines that create a sense of expansiveness.

detailing

millwork detailing

The millwork design emphasizes precision, material richness, and refined craftsmanship to support the project’s sophisticated aesthetic. Clean lines and carefully considered proportions create a cohesive language that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding architecture.

CONCEPTUAL RENDERINGS

rendered elevations & perspectives

The renderings represent the evolution of the vision from abstract idea to immersive experience. While conceptual sketches explore intention and spatial relationships, the renderings bring clarity, atmosphere, and materiality into focus. Offering a refined glimpse into how the space will look, feel, and function.
